newsactivist

HI folks,
The generous and hard-writing Norm Spatz at Profweb wrote an article in collaboration with me and it's posted here.
The French side of Profweb posted a translated version here.

There have been some interesting comments posted on profweb and I thought It would be good to post the questions and answers:

Stage 3 and more
How many students actively enter stage 3 and what are the results? Is the ultimate goal to have students assess and comment or be actively involved with organizations (the reporter vs the activist)? Are you familiar with either Apathy.org or Concordia's Institute for Management and Community development?

The pilot extracurricular group we started in Champlain in September has not yet completed the program's model; feel free to see how students are faring as they enter Phase 2 and 3 of the curriculum here.

One of the program's goals is to provide students a focused method to explore the news and its greater contexts and ramifications. It is also a goal to help students realize their own abilities to affect the world they can so easily learn about in the information age.
As we speak, I am in the process of encouraging students to enter Phase 2 by creating a blog post in the format found here.

I called NGO's last summer, in hopes of learning the possible activities students might come across in their outreach. Organizations responses are here.

Each student might create such a spreadsheet as part of Phase 2 of the curriculum.

Next September, I plan to reintroduce the program to an even larger group of students, and concurrently help other groups start in different schools. I expect this will encourage participation by all students in all newsactivist groups.

I'll look at the sites you mention, and thanks for the comment!

Formidable !
